LOG CABIN SCHEDULE OF CLASSES
The following is a list of classes and seminars being offered at the Log Cabin Shop. If you have ever wanted to learn the skills of Early American craftsmen Log Cabin is once again offering a variety of classes taught by expert craftsmen and craftswomen. Students will have the opportunity to learn a new skill or polish-up an old one in a relaxed atmosphere. All class sizes are limited so students always have intense one-on-one help from the instructors. New classes are always being added so please check back often. Any questions are welcomed and can be answered by contacting us.
PERIOD LONG RIFLE STOCK SHAPINGwith JIM KIBLER & IAN PRATT September 10, 11 & 12, 2010 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Students will learn to properly shape a long rifle stock in traditional 18th century style. Instruction will focus on shaping the stock from the lock panel to the butt plate. Each students will receive a practice partial stock blank with a butt plate installed and lock panel indicated for points of reference. The shaping of the stock in this area can be the most difficult to work with and when done correctly can take your project from functional to artful. If class time allows stock finishing techniques will also be covered. This is a hands on class. Class size is limited to ten students and will fill quickly. Sign up Today! $225.00 per person. MUZZLE LOADING RIFLE BUILDINGwith DAVE KUTCHERSaturday September 18th 10:00 - 1:00? This first class will be an informal introduction to building a Muzzle Loading Rifle. Topics covered will include tools needed, proper usage, and sharpening. Please bring a dull chisel with you to the first class to learn how to sharpen! A good sharp tool will make for faster, cleaner work. BUILDING CLASS WILL MEET October 2, 16 & 30, 2010 November 13, 2010 & December 4, 2010 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at THE LOG CABIN SPORT SHOP 8010 LAFAYETTE ROAD LODI, OHIO This class will be for the beginner builder covering all the fundamentals with step by step instruction from beginning to completed muzzle loading rifle. The class will start with a pre-shaped stock (either full stock or half stock) and and furniture of your choice. Guns may be either flintlock or percussion and may have a wide variety of brass or steel hardware. Students are welcome to come early or stay later for more time to work. The classroom will also be available for students to work throughout the week during regular store hours. Class size is limited to 5 persons - Pre-Registration is required! MAKE A RIFLE CASEwith MARYELLEN PRATTSaturday September 25, 2010 8:30 am - 6:00 pm at THE LOG CABIN SPORT SHOP 8010 LAFAYETTE ROAD LODI, OHIO Construct a lined, leather case to carry and protect your prized longrifle. Case can be made in your choice of styles and custom fit to your rifle. This class will offer students choices in design and materials for a truly custom case. Hands-on personal instruction ensure a finished product you will be proud to carry. Class size is limited to 15 persons - Pre-Registration is required! $55.00 Per Student Students will need to provide their own leather which could be vegetable tanned, oil tanned or suede. Take this class with a friend and split the cost of a hide makes this a very economical project. Students will also need punches (oval, rotary, or large flat chisel) and Perma Lock needles or others large enough for lacing. Students are also encouraged to bring their gun they are constructing a case for to make measurements easier. All other materials will be provided. This three day seminar will be limited to six students with intense personal instruction and hands on contact. The basic "how-to's" of metal engraving. Each student will receive a basic set of tools, workbook and textbook that is theirs to take home. Amateur gunsmiths, knife makers and jewelers are invited. Detailed tool selection and sharpening techniques, design layout techniques for the non-artist, transfer and recording of engraved work, cutting scrollwork in steel and brass, basic scroll lettering design layout, historical American and English firearms engraving from 1700-1860. $425.00 per student Pre-registration and Pre-payment is required! $100.00 deposit is required at time of registration, balance due no later than 1/04/10. INTRODUCTION TO FORGING FILLED w/ Joe Seabolt & Ian Pratt
March 27 & 28, 2010 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Log Cabin Shop 8010 Lafayette Road Lodi, Ohio 44254Learn tips & techniques from experienced blacksmiths. In this introductory class, students will learn how to properly build and maintain a coal fire. Basic skills and techniques will be covered in detail. Students will make "S" hooks, turnscrews and flint strikers. This is a hands on class and everyone will get time on a forge. No previous blacksmithing experience is required! Class size is limited to 8 students. Pre-registration is required. $150.00 per student. PIPE TOMAHAWK CONSTRUCTION
with STOSH DAVIDSaturday April 17, 2010 9:00 am - 5:00 pm at THE LOG CABIN SPORT SHOP 8010 LAFAYETTE ROAD LODI, OHIO Accomplished artist and craftsman Stosh David will discuss history and commonly found styles of pipe hawks. Discussion will also include some engraving and decoration techniques as well as antiquing and finishing techniques. Students will receive hands on, personal attention guiding them through design, layout and construction of their own pipe hawk with either a brass or steel head and a drilled handle. Please indicate your preference of brass or steel head when registering. Class size is limited to 8 persons - Pre-Registration is required! $125.00 per student $50.00 deposit is required at time of registration with balance due by day of class. Students please bring with you an assortment of wood and metal sand papers 150-400 grit, files that you might have and a lunch. The rest of the supplies are included in the class fee.
