This is an original 1860 Spencer carbine that was issued during the Civil War. The serial number is 36652, both on the receiver and underneath the barrel which indicates that it is Civil War vintage. It has a 22" 6 groove barrel and the rifling is strong. The action functions smoothly and correctly. The magazine tube is missing the spring and follower. The rear sling swivel loop is missing but the stud is there. Both of these parts are fairly easy to come by. The wood has scratches and dings but is solid with no apparent cracks. The metal has a nice brown patina with a few areas of minor pitting. There are no visible cartouches on the stock but the receiver and lever are stamped with a M. The Springfield Research Service serial number reference book lists serial numbers in this range that were issued to the 2nd NY Volunteer and 3rd MI Volunteer cavalry. These are the first model Spencers that saw use in the Civil War not the one issued post Civil War. Additional photos are available upon request.
